In 1649, the Visitandines of Amiens obtained from the King and Monsignor Bishop Francis Lefebvre de Caumartin, the authorization to found a “Maison Fille” in Abbeville. On 20th August 1650, eight Franciscan nuns of the Visitation of Saint Marie are settling in the Hôtel de Valines, currently 11 rue des Rapporteurs. In 1712, the Community of the Sisters acquired several houses and gardens on rue des Wets (fishermen from Picardy) to build a convent and a church. In 1793, the 41 Sisters were driven out by the revolutionaries, and the convent was sold as a national property to Citizen Pierre Meurice, a merchant from Abbeville. Later on the rue des Wets is renamed to its current’s name: Rue des Saintes Maries in honour of the convent and its Visitandines. 7th July 1812, Pierre Meurice is bankrupt, the house was again sold at auction to the Sieur Dominique Lottin, also an Abbeville merchant. The house will remain in the same family until 2018.
